Is your facility prepared?
The importance of AEDs in the industrial sector, including factories, offices, manufacturing plants, and corporate workplaces cannot be overstated. Your employees, customers, and visitors are the lifeblood of your business.
The risk of one of your team members or employees suffering a fatal cardiac arrest at your workplace is real. Each year, tens of thousands of Americans die in the workplace from cardiac arrest. HHKBEA helps thousands of organizations, including warehouses, factories, plants, stadiums, schools, airports, offices, and more, keep life-saving AEDs with a customized plan.
Anyone can be a life-saving hero
AEDs are designed to be used by anyone – regardless of preparedness, experience, or training, to save a teammate’s life in case of cardiac arrest. From first responders to untrained workers, AEDs guide you through the steps of responding confidently and quickly to a cardiac emergency.

How do I improve the odds of survival for my employees, customers, and visitors?
1: Keep an AED
These devices are easy for untrained bystanders to use in a high-stress situation. AEDs should be easily accessible in your facility, spaced according to your facility’s size. For more info about placing an AED around your building, see our FAQ’s for Industry AED Placement below.
2: Learn CPR
Train your staff on CardioPulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), a method of manually compressing the chest to maintain blood flow and oxygen throughout the victim’s body. Getting your staff CPR-Certified is easy and affordable. Educating your employees on CPR can be a great team-building exercise. Even better, knowledge and familiarity with CPR also equips them with the skill and ability to save lives outside the workplace if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions about AEDs in Industry
Selecting the right AED is crucial. For any factory, workplace, or office, you want an AED that’s compact, designed to resist dust or moisture, and offer additional features that benefit your situation.
For industries, such as offices, factories, plants, manufacturing, and businesses, we recommend the Zoll AED Plus or the Cardiac Science G5.
Visibility and accessibility are key. Place your AED somewhere high-traffic, with clearly marked, visible signage. It’s also smart to keep them near the center of medium-sized buildings, and often near other first aid equipment. Avoid placing them in locked or restricted areas, places of extreme temperature variation, or away from most foot traffic.
Saving your employee’s life from sudden cardiac arrest relies on how fast you can deploy an AED after their cardiac emergency. For every minute that passes after SCA without an AED shock, the survival odds decrease by 10%. Because time is so precious, AEDs should never be more than three minutes away (from emergency scene -> AED retrieval -> returning with AED -> deployment) from any given point in your facility.
Your exact number of AEDs depends mainly on the shape and layout of your building, which affects AED deployment time. In buildings with large floors, multiple stories, or many hallways, one AED is just not enough. A general rule of thumb for most average-sized offices and buildings is to place an AED on each floor of the workplace. Test your response times by seeing how long it takes to retrieve the AED from different locations in your building. If the time between emergency and deployment is more than three minutes, you may need to invest in more AEDs.
Your workplace’s AED will need the following features. Our recommendations at HHKBEA are the New Zoll AED Plus and the New Cardiac Science G5:
-
Audio and visual prompts, guiding any rescuer through the process
-
High IP rating for durability
-
Performs Regular self checks
-
Dual language capability
-
Long warranty life
-
Pre-connected pads to decrease deployment time
-
Low long-term cost of ownership
-
(Optional) Real-time CPR feedback
Your AED does all the hard work for you. However, you do need to regularly check that your device’s self-test light indicates no issues. Additionally, note when your battery and pads are set to expire, and make sure you schedule a replacement well in advance of the expiration date. Keep logs of AED inspections, unit maintenance, expiration dates, training, and when you deploy the unit.
Regularly train your staff on AED location, and make sure your team gets AED + CPR certified. Not only does this bring your team closer together and make them feel safer at work, but it refreshes your team to remain calm and save a life in different emergency scenarios.
An Emergency Response Plan lays out the exact steps to take if anyone experiences a SCA on your premises. The ERP should include sudden cardiac arrest response, AED locations and documentation, and specific emergency steps. Your businesses ERP should be reviewed annually, published to all employees, and include:
-
The creation of a Cardiac Emergency Response Team
-
The steps to activate the CERT team, notifying the local EMS, and handoff once paramedics arrive
-
AED placement(s) within the facility and AED maintenance schedule
-
Budgetary consideration for replacing old units, adding units to account for expansion/quicker response, annual AED maintenance, and replacing expired pads/batteries
-
Cardiac arrest response drills
